 Joss Whedon’s Firefly, and specifically the crew of Serenity inspired the creation of the crew for this story as well as some of the character dynamic. Michael Emerson, Iain Glen, and Paul Anderson, are all actors that inspired the idea and mannerisms of individual characters, helping me to differentiate them in the way I wrote them and made them speak and act.

In addition, stories with unusual magic systems, like the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson, the King Killer Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, and the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, inspired me to come up with my own way to deal with magic. It is small and subtle in most places it appears, but it is most definitely there.

 Current progress: 98,816 words/120,000 words (~82%) first draft goal.

Why 120k words? Other books of a similar style to the one I wanted to create clock in at about 120k words on average. With that in mind I figured if I landed right around that point for my first draft, it was a good indication that the pacing was where it should be. I already know that it is going to need some overhauling but the first step is to get the words down.

Plot line wise, I feel like the story is right about the 85% mark so I might be a little behind in word count, but I also know I have a lot of descriptions to go back and make more robust. Overall, I think the story is right on track.
